BREAKING NEWS - Yesterday at around 3.30 p.m., there was a huge explosion in the Port of Gibraltar. One of the waste treatment tanks exploded, and there were some injuries to persons working in the area. These tanks are where all the waste oil from cruise ships and yachts is stored until later disposal. The tanks are only about 50 metres from the fuel tanks where superyachts refuel on a daily basis. Megayacht ECLIPSE is still at anchor in the bay of Gibraltar and Giovanni Romero took spectacular photos.

24 May 2011:

Carl Groll presents one of the most interesting conversion yachts ever: TÜBINGEN is a 47m minesweeper, built in 1957 for the German Marine. She was decommissioned in 1997 and later converted into a yacht at the Jade Werft for an Italian owner. Her exterior almost remained the same. Her home port is Venice. She is now at the Lürssen yard for a refit. Photos were taken over the weekend during sea trials.

Claus Schäfe took the first photos of the new LADY KATHRYN V (ex project Coco) at Lürssen's Bardenfleth yard.

23 May 2011:

Professional cruising shots of the world's largest yacht were not available so far. We are proud to exclusively present Giovanni Romero's sensational ECLIPSE photos from Gibraltar. Here is Giovanni's report:

I had been tracking superyacht Eclipse now for a few days, since I had been informed that she was en route to Gibraltar from Barcelona. I had been lucky enough to be one of the first to see Eclipse, on her first visit to the Mediterranean last month, when Gibraltar was her first port of call, after her transatlantic crossing. I was there ready and waiting with my camera. She arrived very early on a Monday morning, and there was not much of an opportunity to photograph her. However, this time things would be different! She was expected at 19.00 in the evening of Saturday 21st May. The weather conditions were as close to perfect as can be, and my boat was ready and waiting!

I made my way to the small boats marina, when I knew that Eclipse was only 1 hour away from Gibraltar. This was enough time for me to get out on my boat, and get ready to greet her, as she left the Med, and entered the Bay of Gibraltar. As she approached in the distance, I could see that she was cruising at over 17 knots. The sea was quite choppy, at about 1 mile away from Gibraltar, and in the Straits. The tides are usually very strong in the area, since this is where the Atlantic waters meet the Mediterranean. I knew I was in for a bumpy ride, and I prepared myself. When I could see that Eclipse was within photographing distance, I started taking shots, whilst at the same time slowly steering my boat back into the Bay, as Eclipse caught up with me. She had still not reduced her speed, and at times I had to go at full throttle, to make up for when I slowed down to take the shots.

The Rock of Gibraltar now appeared as the background for some of the photos, and the sun which was 2 hours away from setting, was shining on Eclipse's hull. She turned sharply into the Bay, still maintaining her constant speed! it seemed like the captain was trying to evade me, but I was not going to let that happen & give up. I kept up my chase of Eclipse for about 3 to 4 miles, until at last, and upon approaching the harbour entrance, she finally slowed down, and posed for the camera!

This episode had taken around 15 to 20 minutes, and cost me around 300 photographs. What an experience it was chasing the largest yacht in the world! This would not have been possible without my 5 metre fibreglass STABLE, with 40 hp Yamaha outboard.

13 April 2011:

In 1991 the Fincantieri yard delivered the 68m aluminium yacht DESTRIERO (the name means "warhorse" in Italian), reportedly to the Aga Khan IV. Powered by three gas turbines with a combined power of 54990 HP she reached a maximum speed of 59.4 knots (or 110 km/h). She has an incredible fuel capacity of 750000 L, giving her a range of 3500 nautical miles at a speed of 50 knots. Since 1992 she holds the transatlantic speed record with a 53.1 knots average between New York and England without refueling. Being considered as a private yacht, she was refused the Blue Riband (more correctly: Hales Trophy as the Blue Riband was awarded for westbound crossings only) award that she raced for. Actually, she was 11.8 knots faster than Cat-Link V (today Fjord Cat), the catamaran which won the Hales Trophy for the fastest eastbound transatlantic crossing in 1998. After a 2000 refit she was abandoned at a yard in Plymouth before being moved to Lürssen in Lemwerder in 2009. Today the yacht is in a very bad condition as you can see on the photos by Claus Schäfe, taken a few days ago. Destriero's future is uncertain.

Another interesting yacht is now in Lemwerder: It is the 46,6 m SHERGAR, built by Lürssen in 1983 to a design by Gerhard Gilgenast. It was Lürssen's first yacht with a computer based navigation system. As far as we know, Shergar was the name of one of the Aga Khan's racing horses.
